# Create and manage KPIs

A KPI belongs to your workspace rather than to one specific plan. Create it once, keep one value history, and reuse it anywhere the metric is relevant.

## Create a KPI

1. Open **KPIs** in the workspace sidebar.
2. Select the **KPIs** tab.
3. Select **Create KPI**.
4. Complete the KPI settings.
5. Select **Save**.

The new KPI opens in its side panel, ready for you to add values or finish its setup.

## KPI settings

### Name

Use a short, recognisable metric name such as `Monthly recurring revenue`, `Support response time`, or `Weekly active users`.

### Initial value and format

Enter the starting number together with the way it should appear. Tability detects the number and preserves the surrounding text as the KPI format.

For example:

* `$1000` for revenue
* `$0.94/user/month` for unit cost
* `25 NPS` for Net Promoter Score
* `15% conversion` for a conversion rate
* `100 WAUs` for weekly active users

Include the unit in this field. Entering only `100` will create a number without the context your team may need.

### Track against a target

Keep **Track against a target** enabled when you want Tability to compare actual performance with a target.

Turn it off for neutral monitoring—for example, when a metric is informative but higher or lower is not automatically better. A targetless KPI shows actual values and growth without target comparisons. Its value dot is blue when it has a numeric value.

You can turn target tracking on or off later. Tability keeps existing target history while it is off, so re-enabling it restores the target series.

### KPI direction

When target tracking is enabled, choose how Tability should interpret performance:

* **KPI should go up:** a value at or above the target is on track.
* **KPI should go down:** a value at or below the target is on track.

Examples of “go up” metrics include revenue and activation. Examples of “go down” metrics include incident count and response time.

### Default view

Choose whether the KPI panel opens with a **Day**, **Week**, or **Month** timeline. You can temporarily switch the timeline from the KPI panel whenever you need a different level of detail.

### Workspace access

Choose the KPI's starting global access:

* **Everyone can edit**
* **Everyone can view**
* **Only invited people and teams can access**

## Edit a KPI

1. Open the KPI.
2. Open the **More** menu (`...`).
3. Select **Edit**.
4. Change the name, initial value and format, target settings, default view, owner, description, or data source.
5. Select **Save**.

Only people with effective edit access can change a KPI.

## Assign an owner

Open **Edit** and select a workspace member in the **Owner** field. Assigning an owner also gives that person edit access to the KPI.

Changing or clearing the owner does not automatically remove an edit permission that was granted by an earlier owner assignment. Review **Manage access** if that person should no longer have access.

## Delete a KPI

1. Open the KPI.
2. Open the **More** menu (`...`).
3. Select **Delete**.
4. Confirm the deletion.

Deleting a KPI permanently deletes its values, targets, permissions, data-source configuration, and attachments. Removing a KPI from a plan or View does **not** delete the KPI.
